KDL40W3000 User Menu Options
Sony KDL40W3000 can be great in the sense that it allows you to adjust the picture to your heart's content due to the abundant controls, but the sheer number of options can be quite daunting as well. Let's go through some of them.
DRC Mode is the short form for Digital Reality Creation, and is available only when the source is 480i or 576i. On the Sony KDL40W3000 two preset modes and a palette that can be configured can be found. According to my observations, enabling DRC Mode improves video deinterlacing slightly but adversely affects film mode deinterlacing.
Black Corrector will adjust the gamma at the low-end which will result in loss of shadow detail; whereas Adv. Contrast Enhancer is another low-end gamma modifier that is dependent on luminance. The latter unfortunately makes image look more artificial as gamma tracking is affected.
Clear White bumps up the overall colour temperature to increase the apparent whiteness on screen. This option can be used as a creative measure when calibrating greyscale on the Sony KDL40W3000.
On the issue of Colour Space, one should select "Standard" which provides the most accurate colour profile. "Wide" causes the colour to look more vivid yet inaccurate, an effect which is amplified by "Live Colour".
Unlike previous Sony Bravias, on the Sony KDL40W3000 you can calibrate the greyscale directly from the user menu without breaking into the service menu. The White Balance options are the key here, although you still need to have calibration equipment and knowledge to adjust them with certainty.
Detail Enhancer & Edge Enhancer use their respective sharpening algorithm to enhance the image displayed on the Sony KDL40W3000. Truth be told, the end result were rather subtle in real-world programmes.
